Billy Macagnone has had music in his life as long as he can remember. As well as being a 6th degree Black Belt Master in Seido Karate, he is also an authorized master trainer GYROTONIC® instructor. Billy works everyday to maintain peace and balance in his life, and music is crucial and fundamental to that effort. His favorite instruments are the flute and percussion, and day to day he can be found relaxing and unwinding to sounds of music.
Billy Macagnone first picked up the flute, like so many musicians do, in his high school band. Billy was fortunate to grow up in New York City, a place where music is a vital part of your surroundings. Music fills New York City, framing the cacophony and inspiring its residents. Billy loved learning the complexities of the flute and learned his instrument quickly.
At 18, Billy auditioned for the prestigious Boston Conservatory to study music full-time. The Brooklyn Conservatory was founded in 1897 by German-American immigrants to instruct in classical European music. Occupying a beautiful mansion in the Park Slope Historic District, these days the conservatory focuses more on American jazz, Latin jazz and gospel. Billy would have flourished at the conservatory. He had dreamed of a career in music but he had other responsibilities.
Billy’s family has been in the restaurant business for decades. His father’s crown jewel, Sal Anthony’s, was a staple of Manhattan for many years. The family business required everyone to pitch in. Anyone who has worked in the restaurant industry knows the long hours and sacrifices necessary for success. Billy has always been active in the restaurants, but once he was finished with high school he felt obligated to start contributing full time. Billy attributes this to his strong Italian heritage: family first. So Billy forewent formal musical education to help grow his father’s business.
Though music remained an important part of his life, in his early 20s Billy was focused more on martial arts. That attraction to physicality led him down the path that would eventually end with him owning the largest GYROTONIC® studio in New York City. Yoga and GYROTONIC® are exceptional examples of mind and body working together. The spiritual aspect of the both practices awoke in Billy Macagnone a rejuvenated sense of purpose. Billy began following his heart which led him away from the restaurant business and towards Yoga and GYROTONIC®.
As he was shifting his life, both personally and professionally, to the instruction of these physical disciplines, Billy never let go of his love of music. Playing music is a similarly beautiful combination of body and mind, and the more Billy got involved in the tenets of fitness and health, the more he saw the many ways that music and personal wellness are intertwined.
Music serves an important purpose at Billy’s Body Evolutions studio. He has led courses such as the GYROTONIC® Level 1 as a Musical Journey Course. In this course, an original musical score, created by Gyrotonic Method creator, Juliu Horvath, in collaboration with musician, Rodolfo Troncoso, guides movers through a fluid, continuous stream of Gyrotonic Level 1 exercise sequences.
Nowadays, Billy Macagnone plays music very regularly. He is a part of the Finding, a band spearheaded by his friend Daniel Giel. They have performed around town and had a few recording sessions. For Billy Macagnone, the music is still playing and shows no signs of stopping.
